Activity 2. Telling Stories: Free Resources and CCL.

Today, the presentations are very common. Therefore, it is necessary to know how to perform it and in what way. We can find presentations on many aspects of the life, especially in the academic and labor ambit. For example, without going any further a business: When a company wants to sell a product, the marketing side is very important,. A good presentation of the product ensures numerous sales; but on the contrary, a bad presentation leads to ruin. This example can be extrapolated to scholar environment. Teachers must know perfectly how to make a good presentation using the right tools or apps. They have to teach this aspect to children. In that way, both teachers and children must be continually exposing for a right and proper teaching-learning process.

There are two basics on the use of educational resources: The first one is the important to understand how to do a real good presentation. And the second one, how to create and use free resources. Both are combined, that is, we employ both to do a good work. Therefore, we need free resources, Creative Commons Licence, and tips to know how to make a good presentation.

Creative Commons Licence is public copyright licenses for the free distribution of a creator´s work. There are four kinds of licenses for protection and flexibility of owners: Attribution (BY), Share-alike (SA), Non-commercial (NC) and Non-derivative (ND)

So, once that we have used these free resources, let´s apply some tips for developing a good presentation. (One idea per slide; Be brief and concise in your ideas; Good quality of your pictures; Try to not gesticulating to much..)

These are explained in the next Slideshare work. The first part is about Creative Commons Licence (what is and how to use it). And the second part is related to 20 tips for develop a good presentation.

For this purpone we are going to explore them in the context of telling a good story. The topic that we chose for our oral presentation was "The Food Chain...with Dinosaurs" so we made a funny presentation with a slideshow for supporting it and try to explain it as good as possible.

To develop this activity, the facilitator (Alicia) divided this activity into three different groups in order to organize better ourselves:

The first group was composed by Javier, Mariano and Ana and they had to imagine a topic and the star had to present it with a slideshow so they looked for information and they created the slide show with hand drawings made by Mariano. The topic they chose was the food chain, but explained with dinosaurs.

The second group was composed by Natalia and Alicia and they had to upload a show presentation to slide share with 30 slides with creative commons license explaining it.

And the third group was composed by Irene and Maria José and they had to search for information on the Internet about their part and also chose different photos with Creative Commons Licenses about how to do a good presentation. Javier offered to do the storyboard and once each group finished the tasks we had to explain everything to the star, which was Ana, the content of our matter in order to explain it to our classmates.

The words that the translator decided to explain in the translator role were:

Storyboard: a series of illustrations displayed in sequence for the purpose of serving as a guide to developing a story, previewing an animation or following the structure of a film. Storyboards are an essential tool for making and developing a good presentation, as they allows a visual and mental guideline to follow.

(Free) Resources: materials (documents, pictures, drawings, music…) that we can use for our work and can be copied, edited, altered, redistributed...always with permission of the owner. Usually those materials should not be used with commercial purposes. Within this concept we can find Creative Commons and many tools and websites (Flickr, Jamendo..) for using resources rationally and legally.

Creative Commons licenses: are public copyright licenses for the free distribution of a creator´s work. Authors give the right to share or use upon their artistic production. There are four kinds of licenses for protection and flexibility of owners: Attribution (BY), Share-alike (SA), Non-commercial (NC) and Non-derivative (ND). GiveMe7´s blog is under Attribution-NonCommercial 4.0 International (CC BY-NC 4.0) since it´s beggining.

Tips (for developing a presentation): advices that could be followed for designing, preparing and delivering an effective exposition, e.g. know your audience as well as possible, choose fonts well or make good eye contact, in order to get people engaged by your subject matter and presentation skills.

Slideshow: a presentation of a series of still images on a projection screen (or on an electronic display device), typically in a planned sequences. Well-formulated slideshows allows speakers to match illustrated images to a verbal exposition. The development of a storyboard as a first step is key for a clear and organized slideshow, and as with any public speaking, some rehearsal is required to make an engaging and useful presentation.

Related to educational competencies, presentation skills become very useful as the teacher can effectively display information to groups, transforms himself/herself into a good communicator, learn how to use a variety of presentation methods to maintain group focus and how to change tactics midstream if something isn’t working. And all of this using resources with the permission of the legal owners, thereby instilling a fairer use of assets, especially digital ones.

Analyzing the Telling Stories of Resources and visual presentations practice:

The best part of the activity was discovering what a Creative Commons license was and how to do a good presentation using 20 basic tips for developing it. And the best moment was when we had all the work prepared to do the presentation. It was difficult to put in common all the information that we had done peers of two, so when we finally had our work finished; we were excited to teach our classmates how we can present a wonderful work.

The problems were the organization of the group. As we are a large number of people, we have to divide and coordinate us in the best possible way. And sometimes there are disagreements about how to perform the work or how to choose the best option to do the presentation. So every week we need to constantly improve the teamwork and divide the activities, because to do a good activity, it is important to be a solid group of work and interact each other to express our feelings and opinions in order to work more efficiently and have better results.

With this topic we have learnt that is important to know how to do a good presentation to our students or classmates and also when we present a project it is important to use our own resources or if we are going to use others, we have to research for those which have Creative Commons Licences and we should respect others’ work and attributions.

What is your perception of the group work on this activity?

It was a very interesting practice because we learnt how to do a good presentation, which is so important if you don't want the students to get bored and get asleep in class. We also learnt what creative common licenses are and how we should use them, which is also very important when doing a job with pictures or presentations.
